Grannie Annie News — 2022/2023, Collection 18

Grannie Annie Published Students in the News

Grannie Annie published authors (and their teachers!) have been recognized in numerous schools and communities in the U.S. for their contributions to The Grannie Annie's 18th collection of family stories. And rightly so! You can read a news story about Grannie Annie published students from the St. Louis, Missouri, area here.

Published students, if a news article was published about your Grannie Annie story, please send it to us, so we can add it to this page.

The Stories To Be Published

Congratulations to the 16 soon-to-be-published Grannie Annie authors! This is quite an honor for these young writers, to be published in The Grannie Annie's 18th collection — and to have their work selected from the 155 historical family stories received this year! The stories were written and submitted by students from Nebraska to North Carolina, and each story was read, appreciated, and carefully considered by The Grannie Annie's committee of volunteer readers. A special thanks to all these students, their families, and their teachers for sharing these stories with The Grannie Annie and the world.

In addition to being published on this website, this year's annual collection of historical family stories will again be available as a free PDF. The sixteen memorable stories included in this 18th annual collection will also be shared through Facebook and Twitter throughout the upcoming year. Please watch this page for updates as the celebration continues!

Celebrate the Stories!

The stories have arrived! A big thank-you to the students, families, and teachers who have shared historical family stories with The Grannie Annie.

This year's stories arrived from the states of Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, and Ohio. The Grannie Annie's committee of volunteer readers have already begun reading the 155 stories received this year.

Stories are being read, appreciated, and reread as the volunteer readers decide which stories will be published (on this website and in a complimentary PDF) in the 18th collection of Grannie Annie family stories. The titles of the stories chosen for publication and the names of their authors will be announced on this page in March. In addition, authors of stories chosen for publication will receive a personal email from The Grannie Annie. You can also follow the news on The Grannie Annie's Facebook page.

For now, let the celebration continue! What does your Grannie Annie celebration include? Visit "The Grannie Annie Extension Activities" for inspiration, or send us your ideas to be added to the page.

Will you be reading your story to an audience? This Resource for Enrichment may be helpful as you prepare: "Reading Your Grannie Annie Story Aloud."

Grannie Annie Author Continues Research After Publication

Since the publication of “Forty-Eight Years” in 2019, Maddy Pense has done extensive research on her family’s history — and made some surprising discoveries. She recently told The Grannie Annie, "The events I wrote about are mostly incorrect." Maddy wrote her Grannie Annie story based on information she learned from her family and also found on the Internet. The story is about her great-great-grandfather's uncle, who fought in the American Civil War.

In a recent annotation to her story Maddy says, "I was, and am still, glad to have submitted my story to The Grannie Annie, and am grateful that it was selected for publication. . . . It is my hope that the true story of Carter Shields’ service in the American Civil War will soon become the version widely available to the public. I am thankful for the opportunity to make this annotation to my story, and intend to continue my efforts to amend inaccurate accounts of Carter’s life."
