As you may be aware, we recently reached the point where we were no longer able to continue The Grannie Annie.

The Grannie Annie’s twenty published collections of historical family stories (including 571 stories written by young people) and related resources have been passed on to the Missouri Historical Society Library & Research Center for further sharing through the library and associated museums.

PDFs of all twenty published collections, the topical index of Grannie Annie stories, a comprehensive family-story-writing resource, and archived copies of The Grannie Annie’s website will continue to be available digitally through Internet Archive, a nonprofit website and free resource. To find these PDF books and resources, go to https://archive.org, put “The Grannie Annie Family Story Celebration” in the larger Search window, click on “Search metadata,” and then click “GO." To see archives of The Grannie Annie’s website, put “thegrannieannie.org” in the Search window and click on “Search archived web sites.”

This website will continue to exist through December 2025.

We sincerely thank you all for your support of The Grannie Annie over the past twenty years. It has been a joy!

Welcome to The Grannie Annie!

The students above are now published authors! Read their work, published in The Grannie Annie's 19th collection of historical family stories — on this website and also available as a complimentary PDF.

The mission of The Grannie Annie is to inspire young people to discover, write, and share stories from their family's history, and to publish collections of their work.

The Grannie Annie invites students everywhere to discover and share stories from their family's history — stories from before the student's birth. Participation in The Grannie Annie leads young people to strengthen family bonds, encounter history in a more personal way, and hone their writing skills.

In the spirit of celebration, each year some of the stories submitted to The Grannie Annie are selected for publication on this website and in a free PDF. The published Grannie Annie stories bring history to life and give readers of all ages a vivid glimpse of life in other places and other times.

You Are Invited!

If you are a student in U.S. grades 4 through 8, or a homeschooled or international student 9 through 14 years of age, you are eligible to submit a story to The Grannie Annie. You are invited to interview a family storykeeper and write about something you learn from your family's history — a story from before your birth. Then share your story with your family, school, and community . . . and with The Grannie Annie!

Who are the storykeepers in your family? Ask them about your grandparents and great-grandparents, your parents, aunts, and uncles. Ask about their daily lives, their adventures, their joys, and their sorrows. Your story can be humorous, tragic, or inspirational. It can be a story of courage, adventure, or anything you find interesting about your family’s past.

Explore this website to read family stories written by young people from around the world — and to learn how you can write your own family story and submit it for possible publication in one of The Grannie Annie's annual collections.

About The Grannie Annie Mission

As stated above, the mission of The Grannie Annie is to inspire young people to discover, write, and share stories from their family's history, and to publish collections of their work.

Through its annual publications and additional related activities, The Grannie Annie encourages people around the world to interview family members to discover stories from their family’s history. When the stories are brought to life in written form, they can be shared with others and preserved for future generations.

There's even more: Behind each family story lie experiences familiar to people in different centuries and on different continents. These simple, and very personal, family stories can help writers and readers to forge a bond with people whose lives may seem very different from their own — and move the world one step closer to peace.
